Merciful storekeeper changes robber’s mind, religion

NEW YORK (CNN) – A potential victim became a compassionate counselor during a recent robbery attempt, changing the would-be criminal’s mind — and apparently his religion.

Storekeeper Mohammad Sohail was closing up his Long Island convenience store just after midnight on May 21 when — as shown on the store’s surveillance video — a man came in wielding a baseball bat and demanding money.

“He said, ‘Hurry up and give me the money, give me the money!’ and I said, ‘Hold on’,” Sohail recalled in a phone interview with CNN on Tuesday, after the store video and his story was carried on local TV.

Sohail said he reached under the counter, grabbed his gun and told the robber to drop the bat and get down on his knees.

“He’s crying like a baby,” Sohail said. “He says, ‘Don’t call police, don’t shoot me, I have no money, I have no food in my house.’ ”

Amidst the man’s apologies and pleas, Sohail said he felt a surge of compassion.

He made the man promise never to rob anyone again and when he agreed, Sohail gave him $40 and a loaf of bread.

“When he gets $40, he’s very impressed, he says, ‘I want to be a Muslim just like you,’ ” Sohail said, adding he had the would-be criminal recite an Islamic oath.

“I said ‘Congratulations. You are now a Muslim and your name is Nawaz Sharif Zardari.’”

When asked why he chose the hybrid of two Pakistani presidents’ names, the Pakistani immigrant laughed and said he had been watching a South Asian news channel moments before the confrontation.

Sohail said the man fled the store when he turned away to get the man some free milk.

He said police might still be looking for the suspect but he doesn’t intend to press charges.

“The guy, you know, everybody has a hard time right now, it’s too bad for everybody right now in this economy,” said the storekeeper.

July 4th 2009! Mark you calendars for the second annual Journey of Faith Conference in Toronto, Canada! Last year we missed it because we had an AlMaghirb Institute seminar in DC that same weekend but I ordered the entire conference on DVD. But this year in sha Allah we’ll get to see it live, can’t wait to hear all the awesome lectures and speakers! If you live anywhere close to Toronto, I’d say this conference is definitely worth the drive!

First of let me say that I’m not endorsing music or saying its permitted in Islam, just thought I’d blog about this story because it mentions Muslims.

Heard this interesting story on NPR Radio the other day. The Rapper Busta Rhymes has come out with a song entitled “Arab Money” which has caused some controversy amongst some of his Muslim and Arab fans. One fan in particular, Yassir Alsalman, a Iraqi rapper in Canada was offended and decided to write a parody rap about it. Yassin’s rap got so much attention, even Busta Rhymes himself contacted Yassin; he apologized for some of his lyrics and even changed them.

Whats so stupid is that these music artists are so out of touch with whats going on in the world, Busta Rhmyes raps about how there’s so much money and wealth in Dubai (Arab world). BUT the ironic part is that Dubai is not doing so well these days, the real estate is imploding and their economy is contracting! Arab money ain’t what it used to be Busta!!!!!!

Another dumb thing Busta did is, he made a remix of the song including 2 ayaat (verses) of the Quran as a chorus and the song is about money, wine and women and he identifies himself as Muslim. If he says hes Muslim why the heck is he rapping about these things and including the verses of the Quran in his songs???? What an oxymoron!

Music is unlawful in Islam, so what type of Islam are these Muslims claiming to follow? Certainly not the Islam of the Quran and Sunnah.
